The National Land Commission (NLC) today led a public participation forum in Laikipia County to gather views from residents and stakeholders on the draft Investigation of Historical Land Injustices Regulations, 2026.
The forum, held at Emess Hotel in Nanyuki, brought together community members, elders, women, youth, pastoralists, civil society organisations and other stakeholders, who shared their views and recommendations on the proposed Regulations.
The public participation exercise seeks to enhance awareness of the draft Regulations, incorporate views from affected communities and stakeholders, and fulfil the constitutional requirement for public participation in the law-making process.
Earlier, the NLC delegation paid courtesy calls on Laikipia Governor H.E. Joshua Irungu and Laikipia County Commissioner Duncan Darusi ahead of the public engagement.
Governor Irungu welcomed the Commission’s engagement in the county and underscored the importance of involving communities in shaping a legal framework that promotes justice, peaceful coexistence and sustainable land governance.
The NLC delegation was led by Chairperson Dr. Abdillahi Alawy and included Commissioner Daniel Muriungi, Director of Legal Affairs and Dispute Resolution Brian Ikol, Laikipia County Coordinator Ms. Grace Wairagu and other Commission officials.
The draft Regulations are intended to provide a framework for the investigation and determination of historical land injustice claims, strengthening the Commission’s efforts to address historical grievances and promote equitable and sustainable land governance.
