The National Land Commission today convened a consultative meeting with representatives of the Lower Sego Clan, Kapkomol Clan, the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet, the Ministry of Lands, and other stakeholders to review the implementation of the Commission’s determination on the Historical Land Injustice claims relating to the Lower Sego and Chepsigot Adjudication Sections. The determination was issued on 7 February 2019 and subsequently gazetted on 1 March 2019.
The meeting was chaired by the Chairperson of the Historical Land Injustices Committee, Commissioner Hon.Mary Seneta, alongside Commissioner Hon. Mohamed Abdi Mohamed and attended by the Commission’s Chief Executive Officer, CHRP Kabale Tache.The HLI Secretariat was was led by Edmond Gichuru.
Commissioner Hon. Mary Seneta reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to a fair, inclusive, and transparent process that takes into account the views of all parties while supporting a lasting resolution.
Commissioner Hon. Mohamed Abdi Mohamed emphasized the importance of dialogue, consensus, and collaboration in resolving the matter, and commended the parties for presenting their concerns respectfully and constructively.
The Chief Ecxecutive Officer, CHRP Kabale Tache noted that although the Commission made its determination in 2019, implementation has faced delays due to differing views on implementation of the commission determination . She encouraged all stakeholders to continue engaging in good faith to build consensus and achieve a sustainable resolution for the affected communities.
The meeting reviewed the current status of the implementation of the Commission’s determination, considered additional information presented by stakeholders, and agreed on the need to develop an appropriate way forward toward effective implementation.
Also present were Senator Prof. Margaret Kamar, Elgeyo Marakwet County Executive Committee Member for Lands Mr. Thomas Maiyo, County Coordinator Elgeyo Marakwet Rebecca Maritim and other stakeholders.
