NLC Chairperson Gershom Otachi who also chairs the caucus of Constitutional Commissions and Independent Office holders (CCIOs), on Wednesday led other Chairpersons, Commissioners and Chief Executive Officers from the various commissions in a consultative forum with The Deputy President H.E. Hon Rigathi Gachagua at his Karen Office.
The forum provided a platform for the commissions to apprise on the mandate and milestones of respective Commissions and Independent Offices, develop modalities for strengthened structured collaboration and cooperation between the Executive and CCIOs, identify challenges, and to realign the focus of CCIOs to positively contribute to the BETA Government Agenda.
Speaking during the meeting Mr. Otachi highlighted the NLC’s mandate and commitment to delivering its services to the public, despite the challenges faced by the commission that include declining budgetary allocation over the years, limited office space at the headquarters and also in the counties.
The Chairperson requested the Deputy President to help CCIOs to overcome some of the cross-cutting challenges.
On his part, the DP challenged the CCIOs to discharge their duties as dictated by the law.
The consultative forum resolved to:
1. Strengthen collaboration between the Executive and the Constitution Commissions;
2. Support review of legal and policy framework to strengthen CCIOs;
3. Support the National Government Development Agenda;
4. Implementation of recommendations from Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices and address the crosscutting challenges affecting the CCIOs
Along with Mr Otachi, NLC was also represented at the meeting by Commissioner Hon. Esther Murugi and CEO Kabale Tache Arero.
