The National Land Commission (NLC) has commenced a reconnaissance visit for the proposed Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), a flagship infrastructure project expected to boost regional connectivity and economic development.
Led by the NLC Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Kabale Tache, the Commission’s team is in Kisumu County to familiarize itself with the proposed railway corridor following directives from the Ministry of Roads and Transport and Kenya Railways Corporation.
The visit began with courtesy calls to the County Coordinator’s Office and the Office of the County Commissioner, Kisumu County Mr Benson Lepalmorijo, where the team was warmly received. The County Commissioner assured the Commission of adequate security within the project area and pledged full cooperation throughout the implementation process.
As part of the exercise, the team held consultative meeting at Kodiaga Prison to discuss land parcels proposed by the Kenya Railways Corporation for the SGR groundbreaking exercise.
During the engagement, the NLC CEO emphasized the need to prioritize public land, identify potential challenges early, and ensure meaningful engagement with local leadership and communities. She noted that the project’s targeted completion timeline is June 2027.
The team later conducted ground verification visits to Kibos and Kodiaga Prison to assess the suitability of the proposed sites. Following the assessments, Kodiaga Prison land was agreed upon as the most viable location for the groundbreaking.
