National Land Commission (NLC) CEO Kabale Tache this morning appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on Land, Environment and Natural Resources, chaired by Senator Faki Mohamed, to address a petition concerning an allegedly grabbed parcel of public land in Kithima, Meru County.
The land in question was originally reserved for public facilities under the defunct County Council of Meru—including a secondary school, primary school, dispensary and church. However, a church now runs private learning institutions and a church, prompting concerns from petitioners.
The CEO reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to a consultative and transparent resolution, underscoring that the NLC remains dedicated to protecting all land designated for public use. She emphasized that engagements with affected stakeholders would be conducted thoroughly and fairly.
Following deliberations, the Senate Committee directed the NLC to initiate comprehensive consultations with the Meru County Government, the Catholic Diocese of Meru, and the petitioners. The CEO was accompanied by senior officials from the Secretariat, including Dr. Samuel Nthuni (Director, Land Administration and Management), Brian Ikol (Director, Legal Affairs and Dispute Resolution), Josephat Wasau (Meru County Coordinator), and other staff.
The NLC reiterated its ongoing commitment to safeguarding Kenya’s public land and ensuring it remains available for the benefit of communities.
