31st October, 2024

Today, National Land Commission (NLC) Chair Gershom Otachi and CEO Kabale Tache attended the launch and handover of GIS resources at the Council of Governors headquarters. The event marked an important advancement in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technology to enhance land governance across Kenya.

During the event, Chair Otachi highlighted the essential role of GIS as a tool for informed decision-making within the land sector, aligning with NLC’s mandate to monitor and oversee land use across the country. Leveraging GIS technology is expected to significantly improve land resource management and promote sustainable development.

In her remarks, CEO Kabale Tache expressed appreciation to the European Union for supporting the land governance program in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). She further noted that their international assistance has been instrumental to the Commission in enhancing land management practices for the benefit of all Kenyans.

The handover provided GIS resources to 30 counties, the Council of Governors, and the National Land Commission, enabling local authorities to better manage land resources at the county level. This initiative includes the development of a Public Land Inventory and the mapping of ecologically sensitive areas, supporting County Spatial Planning and sustainable land use.

The event was attended by key figures, including the Chair of the Council of Governors, H.E. Ahmed Abdullahi, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Lands Hon. Generali Nixon Korir, and several governors such as H.E. Governor Simba Arati (Kisii), H.E. Dr. Andrew Mwadime (Taita Taveta), and H.E. Dr. Wilber Ottichilo (Vihiga)
