The National Land Commission (NLC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Community Land Action Now (CLAN!) to strengthen the protection of community and indigenous land rights across Kenya.

The MoU was signed in a ceremony led by NLC CEO Ms. Kabale Tache, MBS, who described the partnership as a practical alliance to address historical land injustices and secure community land tenure. She emphasized that CLAN!’s strong grassroots presence brings authentic community voices that complement NLC’s constitutional mandate.

The collaboration will support land registration, monitor the transition from group ranches to community land, promote dispute resolution, and ensure responsible investments that safeguard community rights and sustainable development.

Commissioners Hon. Esther Murugi and Hon. Tiyah Galgalo were present at the meeting. Hon. Galgalo underscored the importance of land registration and the protection of land rights, and commended the collaboration between NLC and CLAN! as a positive step toward strengthening community land governance.

CLAN! President Dr. Abubakar Ketemon Lewano welcomed the partnership, saying secure community land rights are key to peace, social cohesion, and inclusive development.

The MoU will run until April 2027 and aims to serve as a model for effective collaboration in securing land rights, livelihoods, and ecosystems.
