In a significant move towards enhancing land ownership and tenure security, the National Land Commission (NLC) today handed over 741 allotment letters for the regularization of plots in Likii Village, Nanyuki Town, to the Governor of Laikipia County, H.E Joshua Irungu.
The meeting, held at the NLC offices, was attended by NLC Commissioners Reginald Okumu and Hubbie Hussein as well as NLC CEO Kabale Tache and County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Infrastructure, Lands, Public Works, and Urban Development Laikipia County, Martin Ekwam.
The regularization of plots in Likii Village is a crucial step in addressing historical land issues in the region. For many years, residents of Likii Village have faced uncertainty regarding land ownership, which has hindered development and investment in the area. The issuance of allotment letters provides the residents with a formal and legally recognized claim to their land, offering them the opportunity to invest in and develop their properties.
Speaking during the meeting, the NLC Chairman Gershom Otachi highlighted the importance of the regularization process in ensuring that all Kenyans have access to secure land tenure. Otachi emphasized that the collaboration between the NLC and the Laikipia County Government is a testament to the commitment of both institutions to resolving land disputes and promoting sustainable urban development.
The Governor expressed gratitude to the NLC for their support and partnership in this initiative. He noted that the regularization of plots in Likii Village would not only benefit the residents but also contribute to the overall growth and development of Nanyuki Town. The Governor also reassured the residents of Likii Village that the county government is committed to fast track the process of titling.
The handing over of the allotment letters marks the culmination of a comprehensive land regularization process that involved the identification and verification of beneficiaries, as well as the mapping and documentation of the plots. The NLC and the Laikipia County Government have pledged to continue working together to address any remaining land issues in the region and to ensure that all Kenyans have access to secure and sustainable land ownership.
