Hon. Mary Yiane Seneta
Hon. Mary Seneta is a distinguished legislator, public policy expert, and governance leader with over 28 years of experience in public service, institutional governance, and community development. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated exemplary leadership, championing inclusive development, gender equality, social justice, and effective governance.
Hon. Seneta made history as the first Woman Representative for Kajiado County (2013–2017) following the establishment of the position under the Constitution of Kenya, 2010. During her tenure in the National Assembly, she served as a member of the Departmental Committee on Energy and the Departmental Committee on Education, where she contributed to legislative oversight and policy formulation in two key sectors of national development.
She also served as the Secretary to the Caucus 47, comprising the pioneer 47 County Women Representatives elected following the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010. In this capacity, she played a pivotal role in championing the establishment of the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), a landmark initiative that today supports County Women Representative offices in all 47 counties to implement programmes that empower women, youth, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
Hon. Seneta later served as a Nominated Senator (2017–2022), where she provided strategic legislative leadership and oversight. She served as the Chairperson of the Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA), advancing women’s leadership and promoting gender-responsive legislation and policy. In the Senate, she was also a member of the Standing Committee on Health and the Standing Committee on Delegated Legislation, contributing to health sector reforms, legislative oversight, and the scrutiny of statutory instruments to strengthen governance and accountability.
She currently serves as a Commissioner at the National Land Commission (NLC), where she contributes to the formulation of land policy, institutional governance, and the sustainable management of Kenya’s land resources. Her work focuses on promoting equitable access to land, safeguarding public land, addressing historical land injustices, strengthening land administration systems, and ensuring that land resources are managed sustainably for the benefit of present and future generations.
Hon. Seneta holds a Bachelor of Education (Arts) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Resource Management from the University of Nairobi. She has also undertaken extensive professional training in governance, leadership, public policy, strategic management, and institutional development.
